Marble sculptures have been the medium of choice for fine art pieces throughout history. Marble is valued as a medium for sculpture because of its fine texture, its sheen and for its ability to display fine details without cleaving or crumbling. The cost of marble has limited this medium in the past to pieces commissioned by rich patrons, however, today this medium is more affordable and it is accessible to a variety of artists from Europe to the Philippines.
One of the most famous marble sculptures in the world is the Pieta. The Pieta was created by Michelangelo in the late 15th century. It has dimensions of 164 inches by 76.8 inches by 68.5 inches. This sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding the limp body of Jesus Christ. It follows the pyramidal style of sculpture that was popular during this period. You can tell it has a pyramidal style by simply looking at the piece. You can see that the head of the Virgin Mary makes the apex point of the pyramid and each side of the sculpture slopes down to the base making a pyramid shape.
Modern marble sculptures can be abstract, realistic or even mixed medium. The price of the marble sculpture is going to depend on the quality of the marble, the popularity of the artist and the design itself. When you shop for a sculpture make sure that it is right for you before you buy it. Look for a sculpture that truly speaks to you, or that will be appropriate for its intended use. If you are looking for a decorative piece for your home you will want to browse through the work of several artists before deciding on which one to take home with you.
